Shangri-La (formerly Zhongdian) is a high-altitude destination in northwestern Yunnan, China, at an average elevation of 3,459 meters. Renamed in 2001 to honor James Hilton’s utopian novel Lost Horizon, it embodies Tibetan Buddhist serenity with:
